I'm Khaya, originally from Munich, and for the last four and a half years Puerto Vallarta has been home.

My name carries two meanings I didn't choose but grew into: in Turkish it means rock, and in Xhosa and Zulu it means home. That's what I make: solid, grounded pieces that make a place feel like home.

My path here was anything but conventional. Biotechnology, industrial engineering, entrepreneurship and sales each taught me something: how materials behave, how structures hold, how to try things fast and learn from what breaks.

Most of my design eye comes from real estate. Selling homes in Puerto Vallarta, I walk through hundreds of houses, and I've learned what makes people stop in a room: one piece with character, made from real materials, that fits the light and the place. Most homes are missing exactly that piece. So I started making it.

Khayat comes from the Arabic word for a tailor: someone who joins separate pieces into something complete. That's how I work. River stone and parota, Talavera and steel, cord and frame. Each material has its own character, and the interesting part is where they meet.
